Ebony and Ivory

I made this piece as a prototype, not knowing whether I could accomplish it or not. The wood is from an old cedar deck post. I if I knew I was gonna be successful I would've used nicer wood. It measures five and a half inches wide by four inches deep and about three inches tall. The wings are about an eighth of an inch thick.
I used my laser to cut the designs in the corners. The handle on the top, has an insert made out of ebony and ivory. The ivory came from the keys on an old piano. I finished it with shellac and then sprayed clear lacquer over that.

Cool! In that black background, one could lose the lower part of an ebony box.

Beautiful piece.   All the parts compliment each other.    Pretty good woodworking as well.   Very nice.

That is beautiful.

You certainly lived up to your username with this piece. The shape is appealing, and it’s hard to believe that started out as a fence post.
Really nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks, you guys are very generous with your compliments and kind words.

John kind of a shape between something from a sci fi flick, to one of those communication pods that came out in the 80s and was sitting on about 3/4 of the conference room tables in the business world. Cool look.

Very cool Piece, John!!!

My experience with cedar is it loves to crack apart, great creation and skill keeping it all under control!
