My Heirloom Toolbox

This is my latest creation. It’s a toolbox specifically for my woodworking hand tools. It has a flip-up top and 4 drawers inside. It also has two sliding trays and a loose tray in the bottom. I made this from sassafras and later found that the wood is supposed to be poisonous and could cause throat cancer. It’s 32" wide and 24" tall. The back is covered with 2-32″×12″ bridle jointed frames with floating panels. The front consists of two similar framed panels but the top section flips up and onto the solid top. The bottom and sides are solid sassafras and they are dovetailed for strength. The drawer assembly is tenoned into the sides without glue and two cherry supports hold the drawer assembly from sagging. The drawers are finger-jointed all around and the fronts are made of solid cherry. There are 3 oak battens on the bottom of the chest for sacrificial pieces in case the chest is slid around. And, they also help if two people lift the chest to carry it or load it into a vehicle.
