Candy Jar Rack - Prototype

We have four Anchor-Hocking Candy Jars that we use for snacks. I found a set of plans for a country style countertop rack designed to hold two jars, but the dimensions are not for the particular jars we have, and they are assuming six-sided jars, which ours are not.

When I come across a need to modify plans, I will sometimes build a prototype to get a visual on what the plans want and how that differs from what I need. I use crapwood, like this salvaged particle board, once part of department store put-it-together-yourself furniture, to build the prototype. In most cases I end up disassembling and discarding the prototype when I’m done. Joinery for the prototype has been reduced to butt joints and screws. This allows for disassembly and replacing components. Dimensions have been adjusted accordingly, including a short bed for only one jar.

I promised this a while ago. The wife will be happy to see this project done soon.

The final product will hold your four jars?

At first I thought that would be my goal. I have decided to stick with two racks holding two jars each. What will change is the mortised square rods. There isn’t a lot of room for them, and none where the original plans call for. Probably a cross brace high up on the back, and one quite low up front, and these will probably be recessed within slots in the sides. Still thinking on it.

Paul,

Four Jars! That’s a lot of snacking. I’m coming to your house!

Kidding aside, I like your use of a prototype to get it right before you use the good wood. I don’t do prototypes because I use the junk wood for my finished projects! I like to think I’m frugal, but cheap is a better word!

L/W: It would seem like we are heavy into snacking, doesn’t it? Rarely are all four used, anymore. The wife and I lost a lot of weight over the past year, so they aren’t filled with home baked cookies or heavy snacks, to speak of. Another good reason for keeping the racks at two jars. We will probably want to relocate the racks to different locations in the future.

Sometimes I am really cheap, instead of being frugal. I was raised in a way that ingrains this. Of course, I only have so much money to work with, the life-long referee in this matter. Basically, I sincerely enjoy taking junk and making something useful out of it. Does that make me a junky? :D

Using this crapwood to prototype gives it a final chance at being useful. I have to pay to get rid of wood—can’t burn within the city limits—so helps a lot to get another shot at using it before I do. I can concentrate on the process without a thought to damaging good wood. Of course, this doubles the time to build a project, so I only do this when I know I’m not clear on the dimensions or design.
