Character swept head Oak double doors

Met the clients earlier this year and they had just brought a lovely 16th century stone house in a hamlet just over the valley, very keen to replace the modern front door with something that reflected the character of the house, lot’s of sketch’s later we came up with this design, wanted it in and swinging for April, long story short, this job turned into my quarantine work, so lots of time to hand joint with my new Japanese saws (Christmas present) and rebate with one of my very old plough/moulding hand planes (passed down from my Granddad), a calm descended on the workshop as time constrains disappeared, I always enjoy my time in there but the feeling on this job echoed much earlier days.

William,

What a great entrance! The doors look really tall. What size are they?

I’ve been working on some closet bifold doors and they look pretty pathetic next to those gorgeous doors!

Thanks guys, Don’t usually show work stuff but making these (and several long bows) kept me sane through the quarantine, Lightweightladylefty, they are about two and a half mts tall and 42 mm thick, hardest part was locating them onto the hinge pins while balancing on top of the stone steps, bi-folds are always a test, good luck with them, when will you post ? Oldrivers, they are happy people, just given me a list of other work to design and price, most interesting is a garden seat made from huge old Oak wine brewing barrels to look like the prow of a boat stood on end, would really like to see if I can pull that one off !

I’m so glad I followed your images in order —- slowly working my way to that end result. I didn’t see that coming!!!

Absolutely gorgeous and it has that air of taking me back in time! Such power in that door. Fortitude.

William,

I thought those doors looked pretty tall compared to most of what we usually see. (We don’t live among the well-to-do. ?) It must be a really unique home. We rarely see a home over 100 years old because none were built well enough to still stand.

I’m hoping to have my bifolds done by Christmas. Did I mention that I’m not very good but I am really, really slow? The closets have been without doors for about 25 years, so why rush now? I figured we should finish the house before we’re too old to do any of the work — probably just in time to sell it!

William,

I finished my bifolds (before Christmas!) and posted them. I wanted to send you a private message because I didn’t want to commandeer your post, but I couldn’t figure out how to do that with the changes Martin has made to the website.
