I’ve visited one of the most beautiful manor houses in Betliar, Slovakia yesterday and took some photos of the amazing and richly marquetry-intarsia decorated furniture pieces. Enjoy…

I started out with an “oh my” … but by the end it was a whole lot of “OH MY’s” !!!!!!!

Thanks for these Martin. I’ve sought out pieces like these to admire in France, Italy, and England myself but they are surely to be found all over Europe. We aren’t so fortunate over here.
Interesting, as I’m sure you are aware, as you move between the languages the terms “intarsia” and “marquetry” become very blurred.

It’s absolutely remarkable to think that such fabulous work was done so long ago. It really makes one appreciate the masters

That must have truly been an amazing time to see all that beautiful work.

Definitely inspiring, I saw about 5 pcs that I would like to “TRY” to duplicate sometime in my future life. Not that they would be anywhere close to as good but it sure would be fun to be able to TRY someday.
Thanks for posting them.

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

Pick one Bently. You do the joinery and I’ll do the marquetry. :-)

Sounds like a great JV, Bently & Paul :) Don’t hesitate.

Bentlyj >> you build it
Shipwright >> you marquetry it
Me >>> I’ll take it :D :D :D

Where do I fit, Debbie, huh? LOL

Martin, I guess you can take pictures of it.
We’ll have to start with an easy one though…(I like this one)

Paul, I’ll be ready for the panels in about 12 years…..I hope you will have them ready, I don’t want to get slowed down on this project. LOL

In all honesty, trying to reproduce old antiques is what I would like to do in my retirement days if I’m still able. Probably would never be able to do marquetry, but I think I could build some of the designs.

Absolutely stunning works! Thanks for sharing these with us.

I’m sure you could Bently and I’m pretty sure I could do the marquetry (it may take the twelve years available though). :-)
It’s not THAT much harder than this one.

Martin - you get to come to Canada (again) and take pictures of the piece in my home!
