(Not So) Hidden Gems #3: Follow, Follow, Follow ...

We tried hard to make it dead simple to follow the members that inspire you as well as to follow the discussions that you want to participate in. I’m sure you will appreciate this even more as our community grows.

Follow buttons are alway handy. You can find the Follow member button close to the author’s name&brief on every creation, blog and forum topic. Follow discussion buttons can be found right beside the Comments/Replies headings.

My advise is.. there’s no problem with “over-following” because unfollowing is easy :) .. but, we never bombard you with too many emails from the posts made by the members you follow. All these posts are nicely presented on your personal Notifications page. You can access it by clicking on the Bell icon in the header that is shown only when you have new notifications. This page also contains notifications about any new activity in the discussions you’re following so you can keep participating.

You will also receive Email digest if you have any new/unread posts from the members or discussions you follow. This digest is being sent 6 times per day.

I hope this will help you stay in the loop on those woodworking topics that interest you most.

MY issue came up when clicking to “follow” a fellow woodworker. The mouse “double-clicked” and I have ended up following ONE person TWICE.

That said, it would be nice to be able to “un-follow” on occasion, so we can correct our own mistakes… ;-)

I like the simplicity of this site. I find it easy to get around.

Your solution is simple and effective. But I do share some of Bentley’s concerns.

" … but while the site is small I read just about all of the threads." while the site is small, yes. When it grows to hundreds of posts each day it’s going to be easier for most members to navigate through the posts mostly by following.

Mike, good point. I fixed same issue with faves recently. Have to look into the Follow buttons now :)

That double-click issue should be fixed now, Mike.

BentlyJ — you are referring to new comments on something?

JAGO - just a grandma’s opinion

Feedback is always appreciated, Bently.

IMO, as we grow, it’s always better to have opt-in follow because the number of posts will be growing exponentially.

Martin,
I think the double-click issue may have been my own mouse, however I am still unable to delete the duplicate or edit my “following” link(s) in my profile. It would be useful to have an edit function here in that everyone’s interests change over time, and thus their “following” interests change accordingly.
