UH 16 Hovercraft

This is a hovercraft I built in 1988  from the plans from Universal Hovercraft for a 15' hovercraft. I had a girl in Engineering expand it on CADAM to make it 12" longer and 6" wider. Then she did many development views to get the ribs the right length for it to look right. Anyway, it was big wood project with pine and marine plywood and West System Epoxy. I flew it for 10 years before selling it. It started out with a Rotax 503 2 cycle engine and then got a Subaru 1800 4 Cylinder engine. The front lift engine is a 10 hp Tecumseh with a 4- blade prop.

It starts off with a frame of very long 3/4" square stringers screwed and glued to the ribs held in position on the 2×6 fixture. Then it is "skinned" with 1/4" mahogany plywood on the bottom and 5/32" mahogany plywood on the sides and top. There were round wood forms made to construct the lift fan duct up front and the cavity between them was filled with 2-part liquid Styrofoam.
The props were rough made by Bob Windt at UH while I waited. He had pine 1×6's stacked up and epoxied together. Then he draws a line down the sides and runs them through the band saw and they are really close to being done. I had to finish sand them and fiberglass the outer surface and balance them. The front lift prop is a 30" 4-blade and the thrust prop is a 64"  2-blade.
The drive pulley on the fan was made from hard maple and I had to turn it in the lathe at Steelcase because it was too big for my lathe. The elevator and rudders were aluminum wrapped over cedar airfoils.
. I used a thinned mixture West System epoxy over the entire surface before painting it. The nice thing about West System is that it penetrates the wood about 1/32" so it makes the ultimate wood joint.

I had made a plywood template for the engine mount before actually making the steel one.

Sewing the neoprene coated nylon skirt was a big job and the repairs to it were part of the reason I sold it. It took a beating.

I wish I would have saved more photos of the build process and a close up of the craft.

I had to buy an Oxy - Acetylene torch to make the steel cage around the thrust fan and a Miller stick welder to make the  steel tilt trailer  to haul it on.

Wow! How cool.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

OK Jim, that might just be the coolest build I've seen on any forum. Do you happen to have any videos? Probably not because until cell phones I hardly took videos of anything but my kids.

That is pretty cool Jim. Bet it was a pile of fun!

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I did have a video somewhere on my Grand Rapids computer. I'll look for it in April,

Hi Paul. It was a lot of fun on water or on snow. One winter I flew it down the North side of the house into the back yard and forgot about the clothes lines. I took all 4 of them out and never hurt the craft. It is real fun on sand bars, too.

Golly, Jim! That’s a pretty cool build!

May you have the day you deserve!

You’d almost need a pilot license to drive it but well done. They look so much fun seeing them fly across the water

Geez Jim,

That is way cool!!!  Bet it was fun.

Can't wait to see the video!
Verry Cool Jim, I bet it was a blast to operate, water or snow.

Main Street to the Mountains

Thats a big time project Jim. Great job on it
Looks  like a big fun project that would be a hoot to operate and go where other boats can't go, just rare back and letterer rip.. Good job.

That had to be a blast to build and drive!
Kids toys for bigger boys Jim. That must of been a lot of fun. Very intriguing build.
Hi Peter. It is different to drive as there is no rudder in the water. You can turn the wheel all you  like but it will not change direction untill you give it thrust. It is like a hockey puck.

Hi Old Rivers,,,It did go over the shallow places and parts of the lake where there were tree stumps under the surface. It ran pretty smooth over choppy water that would normally bang  a boat hull

Hi Albert...What do I win????
