Chess Board for a Friend

I made the Chess Board for a friend I was going to visit on vacation.  He pours and paints Civil War chess pieces.
It is Walnut and Maple with a Padauk accent.  Oil based Poly sprayed as finish.  As I was constructing it, I set it down on the workbench and noticed it was difficult to pick-up laying flat, So I added 4"x 1" - "feet" with felt bottoms at the end of each side.  The 1" elevation solved that problem and it was easy to pick up.  I delivered it to WY, his home.

That is a beautiful chess board.  The feet are a great idea.

Excellent  Mike!
Nice choice of woods for the borders. How thick did you make the playing field?
Thanks splint...2x2 squares, 4/4 wood drum sanded to make smooth so not sure....13/16?  just a guess....

Nice job Mike it looks great. Also Padauk turns brown after a while and quickly if left in the sun.

Thanks Awesum....so much for the accent!  Does Bloodwood do the same?

Mike

Nice looking board Mike.

All the red/purple boards turn brown after a few years in the sun, some finishes slow it, but nothing stops it.

Thank u....I knew purple heart did but  wasn't sure about anything else.   Thanks for the compliment....

Mike
