Mesquite Bowl/Pot

Time was winding down int he Az shop and I had nothing going that last week and I found this piece of mesquite that I turned round in 2019 and just left it like that with a tenon turned on it. So I finished  turning it to this shape and did the sanding and finishing here in Grand Rapids ! It is 6 1/2" and 5" high and I did some light fractal burning all around it here in the barn. Then is was finished with Danish Oil and buffed and waxed with my Beall system.  I sure missed that buffer in Arizona.
It is just another piece for the shows this fall.

You are the master of mesquite Jim! Beautiful work.
Did you notice much change in shape from the relocation?
Beautiful wood, and treated very well. Nice turning Jim.
Love the design!  Great job!

Mike

Thanks Ron, Bruce , George and Mike!!!

Hi Bruce. I did not see any change at all in the mesquite from bringing it up north. One of the reason I like mesquite so much is that it is stable after it is reasonably dry. I find cracks in a lot of it but that lends itself to inlays! In old mesquite the bugs bore oval holes in  that bark and sap wood and they can live 35 years in there according to John Goodwin at the saw mill . I have turned through some of them and got splattered. John once made a fork shaped natural edge table for a lady and after 2 weeks she called John and said " I can hear something in that table at night when it is real quiet" It was the bugs chewing away. He had to strip off the bark and some of the sapwood and put on new contrasting edging!!
I have piles of yellow dust under mesquite I have stored in my barn!!

I have harvested a small amount of mesquite from the local "shrubs". The bug holes were concerning, but my answer to those has always been a spray can of carburetor cleaner with the little red extension straw. A friendly blast in each hole shuts the buggers up!

The yellow dust means you have your own army of bug-elves helping you with the woodworking. No wonder you are so productive! 🤠
Hi Bruce. I have the used the carb cleaner too and sharp steel pick to get rid of the buggers. We cut some old logs one time that were left from clearing the cotton fields in Az. Some had the flying bugs in the holes- the ones that lay the eggs. They are a pretty big bug to start boring those holes!

Another wonderful piece of work. Where do you find all the time to do these works of art?
Hi Jim,

Beautiful work.  The Fractal Burning adds a very pretty feature to the project.
