Glue Bottle Opening Tool

I just bought a new bottle of Titebond III and with the arthritis in my fingers, it is hard to open-even brand new. So I made another tool to open the bottle with ease and without prying on it to distort it.. I notched and bent up the 16 gauge steel piece to fit the bottle snout. Then I made a handle out of some scraps of pistachio wood.It is finished with some satin spray enamel!! It works so good and my new bottle cap will not be destroyed like others have been in the past

That's kinda neat Jim! I knew a lady once who had bad Osteoarthritis (which is the most common type of arthritis) in her knees. She used a couple of canes to get around. Then one day she started daily rubbing DMSO on them. After 6 months the arthritis disappeared and she ditched the canes. It was astonishing.
amen my brother ! as i age as you do i find  myself dealing with more and more things we need to work around, and this is one i do all the time my friend !!!

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

I need to make one of these!  I always struggle with getting the bottle open - especially if I forget to close fully so there is dried glue.
That is a well engineered piece of kit, top marks Jim.

I use linemen pliers.

Saw a woodworker who substituted those yellow mustard caps for the glue bottles, claimed it worked better.  Never tried it.
I too have used pliers.

Ron

Yep - pliers or sometime I use one of those jar opener rubber grippers like used for kitchen jars.
Great way to fight back against mother nature's aging effects. I like the way you mounted the steel piece, as opposed to just bolting to one side of the handle, gives a real professional look to this tool.
Great idea! Well designed and good looking too.
A great idea.  I hate those bottles (almost as much as I hate Titebond glue) so I use a Fastcap glue bot most of the time.  Woodsmith magazine had a similar idea a few years back though I seem to remember that  it looked more like a boot remover.  It may have attached to the workbench somehow?

Nice tool Jim, my version was not near as nice.

Thank you all for all the nice comments!
Hi Rick, what is DMSO?
Hi Barb and John, in the shop I found that a 9/16" open end wrench works on that old glue plugged bottle. I just wanted one that pulled straight away. I have one like it in my shop at home and it always goes with the glue bottle. I used to pry them up with a screw driver then they got full of hard glue on the inside and I usually destroyed the cap in a short time.

It just occurred to me that you could install that bent metal piece on the bottom of a bench or something near where you usually do you glue ups and and only need one hand to open a bottle.  Just slide the top into the slot and pull down.  It would be sort of like having a bottle open installed in the shop  but instead of beer for your glue bottle.

Every time I use my glue bottle I say to myself "I must make a little tool to make opening this easier", then I grip it with some pliers and destroy the top even further. LOL. Well done for not doing what I do.

Hi Lazyman. I use that glue bottle over my shop and in the barn at home . I take the opener with me where ever I go so mounting is would not be an option. If I ever forget it, a 9/16" open end wrench works good too. I was using one here in Arizona until I made this one. I had a lull in project for a while.

Hi Brit. I had  destroyed a number of bottle caps when they got some dried glue up inside and I was using a screwdriver to pry it up. It got so bad I called Franklin glue company and they sent me a bag full of bottle tops. I have only one left at home! Try an open end wrench when they get hard to pull  up!!...metric should work too!!!

DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide.   It was a biggie back in the 80s for arthritis pain relief.  It is used as a prescription drug for treating bladder ulcers - ouch - I shudder to think how it's administered.

Used off-label for arthritis, there does not seem to be any scientific evidence for efficacy, only anecdotal evidence.

A friend had great results back then; I berated him, as the stuff he was buying was technical grade purchased from a farm supply.  He countered that it was 95% pure - in medicine and scientific work, that is absurd, as you don't know what the other 5% might be.  Pharmaceutical grade is 99.995%.  For reference, in one of our labs, we purchased water for $80 per liter, but it was ultra, ultra, ultra pure and came with a certificate of analysis.

Due  to ongoing arthritis in my wrists, I recently ordered some in a roll-on bottle.  I tried it and found no effect after 3 days' use.  More important, I had stinging, irritation and redness where it was applied.  As I write this, I rolled some on my wrist and within 1 minute, the stinging appeared.  No more; I'll stick with Voltaren; not perfect, but it does not add skin problems.  Gotta go wash this stuff OFF !

Thanks, Carey. I take Naproxen for my Arthritis but only when it gets real bad. After I had my open heart surgery, I found out that taking Naproxen every day, like I was, gave me a 20% greater chance of heart disease. Ibuprofen gives you a 30% great chance of heart disease if taken regularly. I heard it too late , I guess.

That's a clever tool! The only place I seem not to have arthritis is in my hands. Go figure. I use some big needle-nose pliers to open the glue bottles. Interestingly enough (or not), I've started buying wood glue in 8 oz bottles. I'm not that prolific with projects, certainly not enough to warrant a larger container that's going to dry up before I can use it all.

I have arthritis bad in my knees. I'm being told to take those pain relievers, but only do so when the pain is way up there. I'm going to try the collagen(?) shots next time. Using cortisone shots for bone on bone is kind of stupid, in my book. At least I have a high threshold of pain. 🙄

Hi Dark lightning. You are  lucky it is not in your fingers. I have had 3 finger joint replacements and the last one was not very good in my pinky finger won't straighten out. They said my hands are like potato chips with arthritis everywhere !!!
I have had both knee joints replaced.
