Boring Head for Milling Machine

I joined a machinist forum on Facebook and posted this boring head that I made back  about 1968. Since Craftisian is also for metal working.  I'm posting it here for the metal workers among us.
This boring head is made of tool steel- hardened and ground for fit and finish. It has a .750" dia. shank and takes 3/8" and 1/2" boring bars. I chased the left handed threads on the adjustment spindle and made a left handed tap to thread the body. It was so nice to have the tool steel and the hardening capabilities. I was the guy who did all the heat treating in the furnace at night when needed !!! I put it in the chincy little box that was painted with black wrinkle finish paint! Some day I should make a sweet box for it!!

Beautiful work Jim!  I never made one but I can certainly appreciate the skill that went into it!
Wow - that definitely deserves a sweet box!
Not sure what this is for, but it looks well made. I'm also impressed you remember all those details from way - way back.
Nicely done. I’ve got a Chinesium one (that doesn’t get frequent use) and it’s not nearly so nice..but I’d agree, you need a nicer box 😁

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Very nice, Jim. With the others that it needs a nice box.

May you have the day you deserve!

Looks cool jim. I'd need a demo to know what it does

Thanks you all for the nice comments. I'll get right on that box. The current one is a little cramped when I put in the 3/8" boring bars. All the 1/2"one  I have would never fit in there.

Hi Tom. This tool is for boring holes in steel- anything really- where you need an accurate fit for something. The last time I used it I had to bore some holes for bearings  for the trailer I made for my hovercraft. The blocks were 1 1/2" x 4" x 8" cold rolled steel.  That was in 1988 !

I made for my hovercraft

You’ve got a hovercraft?? 😳

Hi Ryan. I had built  a 16 ft hovercraft in 1988 and sold it in 1998. Some times I wish I still had it, but it was a lot of maintenance especially on the skirt! It had a 82hp Subaru engine on the back and 10hp Tecumseh engine for lift on the front when I sold it. Here is the project from LJ's:
