I made this rack to display my work at craft shows in addition to the table they provide. It is 55" high, 30" wide and the frame is set at 30 degrees. The shelves are different lengths depending on their position in the rack.. They are different widths so I can stack them and carry them into the show in one package. I tie a rope in the handle holes so they stay together. The hinges at the top are customer made from aluminum with brass pivot pins. There are 3/8" steel dowels that attach the hinges to the frame members,
The dowels came from the Buckley Old Engine Show and were made from maple on a 1916 dowel machine. The bottom shelf locks the angle in place from front to back and the rest of the shelves slide in on the back dowels and down on the front dowels to keep them in place.
The uprights are solid poplar and the dowels are 3/4" and turned down to 5/8" on each end. The shelves are made from 5/16" Baltic Birch plywood on the sides and front and back supports. The surface is 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood with another sheet of 1/8" going in the opposite direction for rigidity. All that thin wood makes the unit pretty light weight. The frame is finished with clear lacquer and the shelves are finished with water based Poly. I think it must take about 6 coats for that water based stuff to build up like 2 coats of oil based Poly!!!
Here are some process shots along the way:
