First Box from the New Shop

This is the first box to emerge from the New Shop location at this Old House...

Most of the Shop was moved up from our basement... This will make for easier access (no more up and down the Cellar stairs) and also provides for temperature regulation (Heat in the Winter and options for cooling in the Summer!)
The Box is made from recycled Wood from an antique Bureau I found last December...

I have been referring to the Wood used in the sides as Oak, but I'm not certain about that... Though it has many of the same characteristics, the grain is a little off both sides and end grain... Also, as peculiar as it sounds, it didn't smell like Oak or Red Oak when it was being cut and the Color is a little dark too??
The hardware is Cherry, that much I'm sure!
The dimensions fell in at approximately 9"x6"x5 1/2" this time...
Another unpurposed (as yet) Box, made for fun and enjoyment...
Thanks for your time,
Comments are always Welcome... :)

so is this your shop tour or a project ?

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice box! I like the design features. How did you finish it?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Pottz: Not a shop tour, an escape from the dungeon! The Planer, Joiner, and Miter Saw are still in the Basement because there is a Vacuum there to keep the dust down...
Ryan Gi: Three coats of Clear Satin Poly, a scuffing between coats with a scotch Brite green pad... when that's dry, I scuff it one more time, and apply simple clear Furniture Polish and buff it out with paper towel... The Polish makes it so smooth as to be slippery and also cuts down on that nasty Polyurethane smell...

Interesting box design, top and hinges.

Ron

Thank You Tony, Ron, and Barb!
As far as a Shop Tour, I can certainly provide one... Trouble is, the nickel tour of my Shop is NOT worth the price of admission!
But I'll take some pix and try to make it semi-interesting

Nice results Mike!
What are your plans for it (gift, collections, recipes)?
Hard to tell with some older woods. Often with old furniture, the wood is harvested locally which may provide some provenance.
Nice job - I like the originality of the top. Hinges are cool too!
Nice job Mike, at first glance I thought the box was upside down. 🥴

SplinterGroup: No purpose for this one, yet... The Wood is a mystery...
The cast-off Bureau was NOT Factory made, shows signs of being a home made thing...
But whoever built it, hit all the buttons!

A lock was installed on the only remaining drawer and...

the carcass is rock-solid, no racking, and had some nice detail work on it...
N.H. has a host of American Hardwoods in it's Forests, so it could be a multitude of things... As I said, it resembles Oak and Red Oak, so it's probably a relation... Beech? Chestnut maybe??
I don't know what it is (but I wish I had more of it!)
Thanks Steve!
awsum55: It could have gone either way John! There was much consideration before the top was cut-off about up from down...
GR8HUNTER : Some pictures were snapped today of both shops, New and Old, and I'll try to put together a Shop Blog tomorrow...
Thanks again, to Everyone, for taking the time to comment!

Those drawer fronts sure look like pine to me. You could do a scratch and sniff to see if it has that piney aroma.
The top wood is a mystery, if home build, more likely local woods.
Good grab!
I thought that’s pretty good for your first box, until I figured it out.
Love the hinges and box joints.

What ever wood that is, it really makes the box look good.

Chestnut was my first impression.

Nice salvage.

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Thanks James and Nathan!
