First of 2025

Back in November, going through the scraps,
I found a leftover from the headboard I built a number of years ago...
It was Box-store Oak and had some decent grain in it,
so another simple box was begun...
But after the Box sides were made,
through my usual lack of foresight and planning,

it was discovered, that supplies of thin stock
for tops and bottoms were completely depleted...
Didn't want to plane down thick to make thin,
and didn't want to use Plywood either...
So I waited, deciding on Luck to provide...

My patience was rewarded!
Someone tossed an antique Bureau to the curb
made of Cherry, the secondary, construction wood was Walnut!

A sheet of the thin back-side of this was planed down
so that I could fit it into Dadoes in the sides in my usual fashion....

Except...
I kinda wanted to add a tray inside of this one,
and doing it the regular way would have left too little room inside for that...
Again, Progress was paused, until it was finally decided
to simply Glue a top and bottom on it
from some of the slightly thicker, drawer-sides that had just been found...

The extra was cut close with the band saw
and then trimmed with a flush cutter in the router table...
Hinges were made and attached out of Cherry that was laying around...

Along with a handle or finger tug for the front...

The handle was very quickly made!
Four holes, drilled through a small block,
and then cut out of the block...
Two brackets were glued on either side to accept a Quick Tray...

The tray was made similar to how "bandsaw boxes" are made...
But a scroll saw was used instead,
to cut the tray 'sides' and 'dividers' out of a hunk of Rock Maple...
This was then glued to a thin piece of that same, Box-store Oak...

And there it is,
the first completed project of 2025...
Looks like I'll have a string of projects
with Walnut and/or Cherry  in them for a while... Lol
Thank You for your time!

Good looking box.   Like the lift.

Great box and great story to go with it!

Wish I lived in a place where "junk" was walnut and cherry!
Nice project! I'd say 2025 is off to a good start.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nicely done!  Great save with your source material.

Nice looking box littlescope! Did you give it a finish? Like your writeup. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Everyone, for your kind words!
I was actually looking at pallets to retrieve,
when the old bureau appeared...
It had only one drawer with it,
so I didn't feel guilty about not restoring it...
The dove-tails in the drawer were marked with a knife and hand-cut,
a home-made piece from some time ago I'm guessing...
I'll do my best to re-purpose the wood!
It deserves better than going to the land-fill...
Mr. Rick: Used satin wipe-on poly to finish it...
Sorry it doesn't stand out enough in the images...
In person, it has a nice glow to it...
