Starburst Tissue Boxes

Latest project between messing with pre-winter yard work and other non-fun duties.

These are basically constructed the same as my previous version

Fancy "skin" for the small tissue boxes that are everywhere.
Twist this time is adding the latest corner features inspired by the ever creative John of Awsumville

Top is 6-1/2" square, cut with various router templates and the impressive Infinity thumbnail profile bit. Super clean cuts on endgrain.

Walnut top, panels are walnut burl with another geometric design I tried out.

I'm getting tired of trying to dye veneer 100% through. it takes a number of steps and can get messy. I do like the patina of the bright red dye splatters over my table saw and router table!

It seems that factory dyed veneers are easy enough to find, but pricey and limited in size

Settled with B and B Rare Woods who supplied some nice large sheets of Kote for $3.50 sq-ft. This species has a nice shimmer and all the colors I used had the same thickness and grain. Very nice!

Corner posts (walnut) use the same profile but this time I wanted to add John's strips of contrasting wood. I cut shallow recesses for some 3/8" wide teak veneer strips.

The hole is for short 1/4" dowel to secure to the top.

The base is just a walnut frame with splines.

I used picture frame "turn buttons" to hold the tissue box in place and some silicone feet with barbed stems to hold them well to the base.

Inside of panels was veneered with some light mahogany.

Thanks for reading!

Nicely done! The veneers look great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice! I like the starbursts. Smart way to retain the paper box. I made a couple covers for the larger boxes and carefully made a friction fit so that the wood box can be picked up without the tissue box sliding out. I'll remember those "turn buttons" for future use.

The Other Steven

Thanks everyone!
Steven, The friction fit is an ideal solution (less parts), but with my luck I'd have used a slightly undersized test box and new ones would not fit.
My fear is the quick grab and snatch for a tissue when a sneeze is imminent. That's when a snag happens and the whole unit goes flying. Had even thought about adding weights!
well done again splint. love all the tiny details.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Lovely! That walnut burl is gorgeous.
love all the tiny details.
Thanks P, I'm a small man 🤠

Thanks BB, I like the stuff and have a bunch!
