DOWNDRAFT DUST COLLECTION TABLE WITH DUST HOOD

Made this sanding booth from material I had on hand and it works super.
The idea of making a booth which is made from house wrap to capture more of the dust that tends to get blown past the edge of the table by the sander or router . The other thought is that I need something compact to be stored on the wall since floor space is at a premium in my shop .
The base is made from laminated hardwood flooring about five inches high and covered with a top that is drilled in a grid two inches square with 1/4” holes that are counter sunk to a 1/2” diameter at the surface .
Underneath there are two pieces of MDF flooring sheet sloped in from the long edges and a third piece connecting the two to form a channel which terminates on the right side into a 4” metal coupler to which the dust collector connects .The hood is stapled to the table along the edges and a moulding is nailed on to further seal the joint and supported by the two outside A Frames and a connector pieces with tennons at the ends which fits into notches into the upper A frames which makes setup easy and quick and just as easy to take down and store ,when folded down the A Frames and cross piece stay inside the made from house wrap hood and a VELCRO strap holds the package in place for storage . The complete assembly is sized that I can hang it inside my large cross cut sled on the same peg .(see pic 4 ) I also added a hole for my orbital sander stand and (which is removable ) and a lamp with a LED bulb which is great for checking the sanding process .
I sanded some cabinet doors and was a little concerned about them sliding around while sanding but found that the suction is so great that I had a bit of a time lifting them and even with the sanding mat on the table and a smaller piece laying on top of it there is enough suction and friction to allow easy sanding and the hood allowed virtually no dust to escape into the air .( my was watching with a light shining across the opening of the hood for dust escaping ) .The size is about 34” wide and 25” deep with a 24” high front opening and the cost is about zero .
I love the result of this inexpensive dust problem solver and am now looking for other applications as dust is always a problem getting into the air and collecting it at source as much as possible is a plus .
