Grape Leaf Green Man

Made this a few years ago, early in the days of learning wood carving. It's from a book by Lora Irish. I was handed a piece of tupelo at the now-defunct Woodcraft in Ventura, CA. I was new enough to carving that I didn't know that there are knives for tupelo, and I had a devil of a time with my regular chisels and gouges. I had to be quite careful to not teat out the wood when cutting. Approximately 9" tall.

Looks like you did well. I would think faces are difficult to carve.

Gotta start somewhere. This looks pretty good!

The early bird gets the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Thanks, guys! That carving provided some real insight into the art of carving. While making it, I noticed that the carving in the tutorial didn't match the carving on the cover of the book. Mistakes can be made in some cases and the carving can be just fine. I used to do mechanical design, and the parts had better match the drawing to within the tolerances, or the final product may not work properly. That was a big lesson for me.

That is neat D_L... but those cross lines are the giveaway of downloaded Pinterest pictures.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Well, if that picture is on Pinterest, somebody ganked it from either the other place or WoodcarvingIllustrated.com

I didn't know you were such a great wood carver. I'm just now getting into it. Great work.
