This is another oldie I moved over. This octagonal box is also one of my favorite projects.
I was just trying to dial in my adjustable angle sled and I cut some strips from an old chunk of oak. Glued it all together and I thought it looked interesting, but I had no plans for it yet.
I thought it might make an interesting box but it was too long, so I cut it in half. I cut 2 bell shaped pieces out of 3/4" walnut but they looked too thick to use as sides, so I cut them in half also. I cut one of those cylinders in half and glued the sides on. I wasn't sure the joint was secure so I drilled a few holes and used toothpicks as dowels.
I liked the way everything was going until I looked for a way to hinge the top. My wife had some old pocketbooks that were suede leather and I saved them, I ended up using the leather to make the hinge.
I also used toothpicks to secure the tab to open the box. I finished it with BLO and then spar varnish and ended with wax. I have another idea to make the box a little different with the left over pieces.
