Hockey Stick Coffee Table

I built this table for my friend Mel for his grand son. He originally wanted help with the design of the legs and it turned into making the whole table in my shop. He had cut off all the 19  hockey sticks and numbered them for the order they were to be installed. The are all hollow carbon fiber so they had to be plugged with wood and Bondo in the ends so they did not take on any of the epoxy that they are laying in. They had to be glued in with a thin first coat of epoxy so they did not float!

The aprons are dadoed to accept the floor of the table that is recessed 7/8" from the top. All the hockey sticks are about 3/4" so there is 1/8" of clear epoxy over them. I made two  leg housings for the ends and  bolted them in with 1/4- 20 bolts into T nuts in the legs..

The legs and sides of the aprons are to be painted satin black so Mel will sand the sides of the table and finish them at his house.

The top is 24" x 40" and  has 3 1/4 " high aprons. This was completed with 5 pours.

Here are some shots from Mel of the finished table. Pardon the last shot- it has a lot of reflection in that shiny surface.

Nice way to recycle some expensive cut offs
Very interesting and clever..
That's a nice build, I'm sure the grandson will be very happy with it.
Very cool! Nice job.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That's quite a build! Looks great.
pretty cool jim !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thank you all for the nice comments. It was a first pouring inside the frame like that and levelness is so important!! I think the weight of the material  moved the balance  just enough for it to run over on one end and not to the top on the other during the 3rd pour which was supposed to be the last.

Thanks, John. Mel picked it up today and will paint the sides and mount the legs next week. I hope to have a photo of the finished table then!
