Donut Hole Punch

Ing at the Phoenix Risings Bakery asked me if I could make a  donut hole punch for them. The big round donut holes they sell/give away are not really the inside of the donut but made separately. She wanted it made of steel so I told her I'd make a prototype to see if would work for them. The dough  is 1/2" thick to start and it has to be cut to 1 1/2" diameter. This one is made from hard maple and I think it will do just fine. Steel would rust unless I used Stainless and that is a  lot harder to turn and very expensive. This one cost nothing but time. If it wears and  works for them, I could put a SS ring on the edge of this one in the future.
I was not sure exactly what she had in mind so I built what I thought would work. It should cut out the blank like a cookie cutter and then  it has a knock out rod- kinda like a compound die - to drop out the piece !!!

It is finished with EEE and Shellawax.

That's for sure! My mom used an old stove top coffee pot lid to make donuts. Looks like yourr will work well.

Jim,

That turning wall looks to less than a 16th!

Bet this a first of its kind for woodworkers.   Nice work and design.

In the past wooden kitchen items were what was used. Should be fine unless some health agency has a thing about wooden ware.
Very nice turning, this should please Ing should be happy.
Great that the "word" about you gets around!

I think as long as they don't beat on it it'll work fine!
Thanks for all the nice comments. It is a prototype. She might have something else in mind. I just want them to try it. I'm always open to try something new that I have not done before. It keeps my mind active to avoid old age and sitting in a rocking chair like many do and they wither away. I lost a lot of friends who retired and had no outside interests aside from the work they retired from.

Cheers, my friends,  Jim
