Journey into Hexagon Boxes #3: Top and Bottom Panels

Moving along to the top and bottom, had to surface a edge join a couple of pieces, to glue up for the width I needed. Used the Moxon bench top with a few cauls.

Once out of the clamps, a light pass through the planner, then marked the cut lines. Cut them on the small bandsaw, then sanded to the line. Back to the disk sander a few times to sneak up on the edge.

Also made up some pieces to use as banding, at the router table did a full round over on the edge of some stock and ripped them to 3/4" width.

The plan was to have a band around the panels to hide the end grain and give it a finished look. This was accomplished by setting up the dado stack to cut a 5/16" dado half the thickness creating a shiplap joint. The trim strips being a little narrow, took a finger board clamped to the fence, and a push block.

I then used the wedgie sled to cut the banding, that worked well. Then back over to the Moxon bench to fine tune the angles and the fit to the panels, The disk sander was right behind me to sneak up on the line.

That top panel does have a dado on the other side.

Then off to the other side of the bench for glue up.

Note to self: need to get a package of rubber bands.

After that set for a bit, it was time to sand both faces, ROS worked for that, 2 different grits. Then a block with paper wrapped around to hand sand the edge profile.

They are getting there.

A few spots to fill, around a couple of the finger joint and the dado that came through for the drawer panel. That's up next. Also need to come up with a plan to trim out the edge at the sides of the drawer, maybe put in a few drawer guides and stops on the inside. And I still need to come up with an idea for a pull on the front of that drawer. A simple block or a turned one.

Thanks for reading and comments are always welcome and appreciated. Until next time.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Pecan looks nice!
What rubber band (brand) do you usually use? I just bought a random one at HobbyLobby and they were so weak.....

Love the linear grain on that lid Eric! The trim really dresses it out.
Splinter, thanks. I like doing trim around tops and bottom panels, gives it a refined look, besides sometimes end grain does not look good.

sometimes end grain does not look good.
Especially to a tree. See end grain, you know you have a severed limb 😃

The trim also acts like a foot for the bottom which dresses up the box. These are going to be classics with the shape and small drawer 👍
Nice work, these came out pretty good.
Looking good - Is the top hinged with a bottom over the drawer or just for looks?
Mike, thanks. No hinge, I am making these for coffee grinders that will be mounted to the top.

In regard to rubber bands for this sort of project when I made a drum I went to a sports gym store and bought "Rep Bands" they  are wide elastic exercise bands which work well .
You may even consider sliting them as they are about  100mm wide

Regards Rob

Interesting item, and would work nicely for the small projects.
