WoodworkingWeb Theme: Wooden BOXES
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am an “outside the box” kind of person! I like to take an idea and stretch it, play with it, distort it, expand on it, and, well, think outside of it.
But that doesn’t mean that I don’t like boxes. As a matter of fact, when I first began my journey into the woodworking world, I just wanted to make a box, any box, just a box. I love boxes. I love the practicality of them, the stackability of them, and the sturdiness of them.
I soon discovered, as I entered the world of the woodworker, that boxes aren’t just four sides, a bottom, and perhaps a lid — no, no, no… they are pieces of art!! Woodworkers young and old have created the most extraordinary “outside the box” boxes, with unique shapes and designs, masterful joinery, beautiful artwork and other unique additions to that “just a box” box.

I made my first box after seeing the design from Blake. That was when It all started.
Then I made this one from a plan for valentine for my wife.
Then a couple more based on Britboxmaker design and blogs.

I forgot the best one I built at the insistence of my younger son; 5 years old then.
He was literarily asking every few minutes if it was done. He insisted to color it -:)
It also the occasion to test my spline jig.

The quilt box was supposed to be a cutting board. There was just too many gaps during the glue up so I recut, resaw and turned it in an easy miter box, a technique BritBoxMaker came up with .

I’ve made several designs, but one of my favorites is this sliding-lid box with finger joints at the corners. The single one is in Sycamore, and several others in Apple wood.

Yesterday, I got the box this far…
Was ready to call it a day, but still had some time… Decided to cut the top off…
All that’s left is to make some hinges, and some way to lift the lid on the front…

Here are some boxes I have not posted before on this or other sites.
The first is a charging box made from poplar with a top from cherry plywood and mahogany trim.
The second is well not square. Made from white oak, red oak and cherry. Fun getting the angles just right.
Tor and Odin are the greatest of gods.
It’s coming together great Mike.
I never worked with rosewood. Every time I look at it, I feel it’s extremely expensive.
It sure is beautiful though.

HZ Mike: I wouldn’t be so bold as to say I invented doweled box joints (I don’t think there is very much new under the Sun where WWing is concerned, other than methods), but I did at least re-invent them!
The thought came to me back in the 1970’s, but wasn’t used until about 2005, when I started making my first boxes…
You would laugh if you had seen the first few times it was tried, I didn’t have complete confidence that it wasn’t going to explode on me… I taped and clamped the corners, not sure if there wasn’t something inherently wrong with the idea!
But it has worked very well… There’s nothing wrong with Glue, of course, but I like the idea of a mechanical connection (I’m a big fan of Timber Framing!)
IanW: Thanks again! The Rosewood was a gift, I’ve never looked at the prices of it… Not sure if I would buy it at any price though, as I understand it’s very close to being on the endangered and unsustainable list… It’s a shame that they’re not trying to renew it as quickly as they harvest it, because it truly is some of the most beautiful Wood in the World…
It’s a pleasure to work with too! Hard as nails, but it machines really, really well…
